A tribute to our African Queens: May they forever reign supreme
America’s history is replete with women of colour standing tall – from Sojourner Truth to Michelle Obama and all in between, Black women have been the glue that has held the Black family together in the face of adversity. Although women in general have not received proper recognition in our history books, there are a plethora of women of colour who have made major contributions in virtually every facet of American life. Simply stated, if it were not for these extraordinary women, America would not be the great nation that it is today.
- Brooklyn, N.Y., native Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm was the first Black to run for the presidency of the United States in 1972.
- Bessie Coleman is credited with being the first Black woman to fly an aeroplane in the United States, earning her international pilot’s license in 1921. Marcelite Jordan rose through the ranks to become the first Black female General in the United States Air Force.
- Dr. Dorothy Brown, a native of Philadelphia, Penn., became the first Black female physician to perform surgery in the South.Although these women’s names may not be familiar to everyone in’s households across America, this does not diminish their achievements or lessen their significance in inspiring future generations of young women of colour across this country.
